Historical Buildings Around Kuala Lumpur – Loke Mansion

Historical Buildings Around Kuala Lumpur Loke MansionLet’s face it… old buildings really need a lot of luck in order to survive in this day and age, especially if those buildings are located in Kuala Lumpur. If that statement is true, then the Loke family must have been lucky in life and in death for two of his most famous creations still stand today. They are Wisma Loke and Loke Hall. The former is now the Messrs Ceang & Ariff law firm, whilst Loke Hall is now home to Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM). Today we’ll be looking at just one of these historical places.

Loke Hall was built in 1907, approximately 5 years after the completion of Wisma Loke. Its design was fashioned after a European town house. No doubt Loke Chow Kit was inspired after his recent trip there. Back in the day, Loke Hall was just up the road from the first railway station and being smack in the middle of Kuala Lumpur didn’t hurt either. You can still see the hall as it is directly behind Merdeka Square.

Strangely, as amazing as the house was, it was soon to become home for a very different group of people.

A mere 2 years after its completion, Loke Hall was taken over by a European group which turned it into the Empire Hotel and it so remained for 10 full years. Then in 1916, the ownership of Loke Hall fell to Alan Loke, son of Loke Yew. Loke Hall was renovated yet again and became the Peninsular Hotel. Like most hotels at the time, the typical clientele revolved around planters and members of the trading houses. Why not? It was one of the most profitable businesses in the country until 1973 when PAM acquired tenancy of the premises on an initial 2 years lease.

In February 1981, the estate of Alan Loke gave PAM notice to deliver vacant possession of the premises before 1 April 1981 as they had sold Loke Hall to Intan Development Sdn Bhd which intended to demolish the PAM Centre Building and the adjoining properties which were part of Loke Hall.

The proposal to demolish Loke Hall and redevelop the site drew much public concern. PAM, conservationists and concerned members of the public made representation to the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL). Consequently DBKL decided to acquire Loke Hall. The then Datuk Bandar (Mayor) Y Bhg Tan Sri Dato’ Elyas Omar, on 24 December 1983 wrote to PAM of restoration and refurbishment works to the building. Subsequently PAM’s proposal was submitted to the Datuk Bandar and accepted.

Below is an MP3 file of a short interview with Mr. K Sreedharan who reminisces the glory days of Loke Mansion when it was the Peninsular hotel.
